The IV that feeds premature babies in their first hours is about to lose its main supplier — so the FDA is loosening the rules for 180 days

Two compounding facilities that make most of the country's "starter" parenteral nutrition for newborns are shutting down. There is no FDA-approved version to fall back on. On Thursday the agency told hospital pharmacies they can make it themselves, without a patient-specific prescription, for the next 180 days.
